Sturmpanzerwagen A7V
Sturmpanzerwagen AV7 was a first attempt made by the Germans to build a tank. It was a very simple design. It had the frame of a tractor system and there was no unique ability about it. It was simply a armored box. On this tank it is very difficult to tell what side is the front. The only way to tell is to look for the machine gun put on the front of the tank. The gun wasn’t even theirs it was a captured Russian Light Machine Gun. The tank had a crew of 18 men and the inside of the ank was very loud, stuffy, cramped, and uncomfortable. 100 of these tanks were ordered throughout the war but only 20 were produced.
M1917 6-Ton
The M1917 6-ton had the same design as the French’s char Léger FT-17. None of the 6-tons made were used in the war. Only 10 were produced and shipped to Europe but were never used. The US came up with an ingenious idea on their tank. The tank had sloped armor which increased the chance of survival by deflecting any rounds that came upon it and at the same time doubled its armor just by making it slanted. It was 16 feet long and 6 feet wide and was 7.3 Short tons. It had a top speed of 5mph and could travel 30 miles before needing inspection and or fuel. 526 M1917’s were made and 374 were actually built with the main armament of 2 .30 caliber machine guns and one 57mm cannon.
Mk 1 Big Willie
The Mk1 was built by the British and the whole range of tank engineering began with Britain. Big Willie was a successful design of another Mark tank after they tried to build a tank called Little Willie. The little Willie failed at all its abilities when it was designed so they built Big Willie. Big Wille was able to cross 9 foot trenches and had a main armament of both machine guns and main guns. Two 57mm cannons and a ranged number of Hotchkiss type machine guns.
Char D Assault St. Chamond
The Char D Assault St. Chamond was an early tank. Made in 1916 it was considered a , “self propelled gun.” It was a very unreliable tank as which it could not overcome the environment it was in no matter what the circumstances. The only thing that was reliable was the bigger than usual 75mm main gun and the 4 Hotchkiss type machine guns.
Little Willie
Little Willie was designed to cross 5 foot trenches and was the first tank built and Winston Churchill started the advancement of the tank by getting several people to study tanks and armored land vehicles and they were know as the Land ship Committee.
